Privacy Policy

Introduction

MurmurAI ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and safeguard your information when you use our macOS application.

Our core principle: MurmurAI is designed with privacy as a fundamental feature. All audio transcription happens 100% on your device — your audio never leaves your Mac.

Audio Processing & Transcription

100% On-Device Processing

All audio recording and transcription is performed entirely on your Mac using local AI models. Your audio is never sent to any external server for transcription.

  • Audio recordings: Processed locally and not stored permanently unless you explicitly save them
  • Transcripts: Stored only on your device in local application storage
  • AI models: Downloaded once and run entirely on your Mac

AI Transcript Refinement (Optional)

MurmurAI offers an optional feature to refine transcripts using AI. This feature is entirely opt-in and requires your explicit action.

  • Third-party AI services: If you choose to use OpenAI for refinement, your transcript text (not audio) is sent to OpenAI's servers. You must provide your own API key, and OpenAI's privacy policy applies to that data.
  • Local AI option: You can alternatively use Ollama to run AI refinement entirely on your device with no data sent externally.
  • Your choice: You control whether to use refinement and which service to use. No transcript data is sent externally without your explicit action.

Analytics & Usage Data

We collect anonymous usage analytics to understand how the app is used and to improve the product. We use Amplitude for this purpose.

What we collect:

  • App launch events
  • Feature usage (which engines and models are used, transcription events)
  • General interaction patterns (export actions, settings changes)
  • Premium status (whether you have a Pro license)

What we do NOT collect:

  • Audio content or recordings
  • Transcript content or text
  • Personal information (name, email address for analytics)
  • File names or content of transcribed files

Device Identification

We use your Mac's hardware unique identifier (UUID) for the following purposes:

  • License enforcement: To verify your Pro license and prevent unauthorized use across multiple devices beyond your license allowance
  • Analytics device ID: To count unique users without collecting personal information

This identifier is a hardware-based UUID and does not contain personal information. It cannot be used to identify you personally.

License & Purchase Data

When you purchase a Pro license through Gumroad, the following information is stored securely in your Mac's Keychain:

  • Email address (from your Gumroad purchase)
  • License plan type and expiration (if applicable)
  • Device authorization token
  • License validation timestamps

This data is stored locally on your device and is only transmitted to our license validation server to verify your license status. For App Store purchases, Apple handles all payment and purchase data according to their privacy policy.

Data Storage & Retention

  • Local storage: All transcripts, settings, and app data are stored locally on your Mac
  • No cloud sync: We do not sync your data to any cloud service
  • Your control: You can delete your transcripts and app data at any time through the app or by removing the application
  • Analytics data: Anonymous usage data is retained by Amplitude according to their data retention policies

Third-Party Services

MurmurAI may interact with the following third-party services:

  • Amplitude: For anonymous usage analytics
  • Gumroad: For license purchases and validation (direct distribution only)
  • Apple App Store: For purchases (App Store version only)
  • OpenAI: Only if you choose to use their API for transcript refinement
  • Hugging Face: For downloading AI models

Each of these services has their own privacy policy that governs their handling of data.

Children's Privacy

MurmurAI is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page and updating the "Last updated" date.
